Finally, Grade 4 whiplash happens when there is a fracture or dislocation in the region of the cervical spine. Grade 1 whiplash often gets better very quickly, and grade 4 whiplash is a requires significant medical intervention. The most common type of whiplash, by far, is grade 2. Some studies estimate that around 90% of whiplash cases can be classified in this category.
For whiplash, grades 1-3, treatment guidelines recommend a mix of multimodal treatment and exercise. Multimodal treatment means that more than one treatment can be provided, and there is no single type of treatment that is superior. These types of treatment can include, mobilization, adjustments, massage, and other possible treatments. Exercises can also be varied, but some treatment guidelines find that active ranges of motion are a gentle and effective way to get the neck moving. It is important to remember that exercise is sometimes painful, but this does not mean that is any damage occurring in the neck.
